Dr. Trung NGO

University of Wollongong, Wollongong, Australia

Research Area:

Numerical simulations using the Discrete Element Method (PFC2D, PFC3D) to model ballasted rail tracks

Research Experience:

In 2013, my doctoral research was acknowledged by Railway Technical Society of Australasia (RTSA) and I was honoured by RTSA Postgraduate Thesis Award, which is awarded once in 3 years recognising “contributions to rail industry in transferring the results of advanced computational, theoretical, and laboratory research into professional engineering practices”.  Based on my achievements as an early career researcher, UOW appointed me as a lecturer in Geotechnical Engineering (from October 2013 to June 2016) at the School of CME. While a heavy teaching load impacted my research output in this period, I have managed to publish consistently my research outcomes in high impact journals while also fulfilling substantial governance duties. Thanks to the appointment of research-only position since July 2016, I have dedicated and focused on my research work and have accelerated my publications thus far in the highly-ranked geotechnical journals (21 articles published in Q1 journals). I have been fortunate to be part of the CGRE, ITTC-Rail and benefit from excellent mentorship by Distinguished Prof Indraratna that enhanced my recent research, and some of my contributions to innovative track upgrading have now been implemented in practice in collaboration with the Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC).
